Vidalia is located in East Louisiana, just across the river from Natchez, Mississippi. We've traveled through the area, and visited there often. Vidalia is the parish seat of Concordia Parish.
Vidalia is rich in history, yet a vibrant community of the future due to its geographic location, its utility and transportation infrastructure, and excellent quality of life.
Concordia Parish is a sportsman's paradise, offering unparalled hunting and fishing opportunities. Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge, Red Rivers/Three Rivers Management Area, camping areas maintained by the State of Louisiana, providea variety of outdoor activities. Nearby is also Lake Concordia and Lake St. John, the Ferriday Museum, Frogmore Plantation and more.
Tacony Plantation, built in 1845, is a well respected ante-bellum attraction as well. The Vidalia Riverwalk consists of restaurants, a hotel, specialty shops, amphitheater, public boat ramp and brings back the "rivertown" charm of Vidalia.
On the other side of the river, Natchez was founded in 1716 by French Colonists, and has a rich history along the Mississippi River. Today it is the county seat of Adams County.
It is the home of a number of nationally known plantations such as Dunleith, Oakland Plantation, Monmouth Plantation, Stanton Hall and others. I clearly remember standing on the porch of the majestic Stanton Hall in 1960 and marveling at the history around me!
Natchez offers a variety of accomodations for tourists and visitors including numerous B&Bs, the historic Eola Hotel and other motels and hotels.
Natchez is also the location of a successful gaming and casino industry, and a major tourist destination.
We've made the trip down The Great River Road, U.S. Highway 61, to St. Francisville, and also north on 61 to Vicksburg, several times, and love the greeen, rolling hills along the way: a highly recommended route!
Shown below are some of the historic postcards from the Louisiana Postcard Collection.
