Natchez Mississippi

Although in the State of Mississippi, Natchez is just across the river from Ferriday and Vidalia in Louisiana. We've traveled through Natchez, and visited there often.

Natchez was founded in 1716 by French Colonists, and has a rich history along the Mississippi River.

In the late 18th century, Natchez was the starting point of the Natchez Trace overland route, based on a Native American trail, which ran from Natchez to Nashville through what is now Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.

During the Civil War, Natchez remained largely undamaged. Natchez was able to make a rapid economic comeback in the postwar years, with the resumption of much of the commercial shipping traffic on the Mississippi River.

Today it is the county seat of Adams County.

It is the home of a number of nationally known plantations such as Dunleith, Oakland Plantation, Monmouth Plantation, Stanton Hall and others.

I clearly remember standing on the porch of the majestic Stanton Hall in 1960 and marveling at the history around me!

It is also the location of a successful gaming and casino industry, and a major tourist destination.

Natchez offers a variety of accomodations for tourists and visitors including numerous B&Bs, the historic Eola Hotel and other motels and hotels.

We've made the trip down The Great River Road, U.S. Highway 61, to St. Francisville, and also north on 61 to Vicksburg, several times, and love the greeen, rolling hills along the way: a highly recommended route!

Shown below are a few images of the past from Natchez plantations and tourist accomodations...
